Why I Chose a Bezel-Set Ring and Why You Might Too

When I started designing my own engagement ring, I knew exactly what I wanted: something secure, timeless, and a little unexpected. That is why I chose a bezel setting.
As a jeweler, I spend every day thinking about the balance between form and function. I want to create pieces that are both beautiful and made to be worn. Bezel-set rings do both.
If you are curious about bezel rings or exploring setting options for your own piece, here is what I think you should know. This includes how they are made, what makes them special, and whether they might be right for your lifestyle.
What Is a Bezel Setting?
A bezel setting secures a diamond or gemstone by fully surrounding its edges, also known as the girdle, with a rim of metal. Unlike a prong setting, which uses individual claws to hold the stone, a bezel creates a smooth perimeter that hugs the stone completely.
At Market Street Diamonds, we create bezel settings by casting a custom seat for the stone. We build in an extra 0.5 to 1 millimeter of metal, which our jewelers then fold over the edge of the stone using a tool called a bezel roller. This is a precise and delicate process. It takes patience and care to push the metal evenly without damaging the stone underneath. Once the bezel is set, we use a burnisher to polish and refine the finish.
Each bezel-set ring we make reflects the skill and attention to detail of our jewelers. It is a setting that is as secure as it is beautiful.

Why I Chose a Bezel for My Own Ring?
Because I work with my hands every day, I needed a ring that could stand up to daily wear. I wanted something that would not snag on gloves or threads, and that would hold my diamond securely in place even if I accidentally bumped it. A bezel setting gave me that peace of mind.
I wear gloves here at Market Street Diamonds when preparing our 3D printed wax models, and I've never had a glove rip. That kind of smooth, low-profile security makes a big difference in a work environment like mine and it's just as helpful in everyday life.
I also chose it for the aesthetic. My diamond is an emerald cut, and I love how the clean lines of the bezel mirror the long facets of the stone. It feels minimal and bold at the same time. To me, a bezel is a blend of trend and timelessness. It is a setting that feels current, but I know it will still look beautiful decades from now.

Bezel vs Prong Settings: What Is the Difference?
Prong settings are the most traditional way to secure a stone. They use four or six individual points of contact around the diamond's girdle. This leaves more of the diamond visible and allows in the most light. However, prongs can loosen over time and are more prone to catching on things.
Bezel settings, by contrast, offer full coverage around the stone's edge. This makes them more secure and less likely to shift with wear. There is also nothing to snag. Both styles are created by modeling and casting a seat with a slight rim that our jewelers press into place.
Choosing between them often comes down to your lifestyle and your design preferences.
What Stones Work Best in Bezel Settings?
Any diamond or gemstone shape can be bezel set, but I especially love using step cuts like emerald and asscher. The bezel highlights their symmetry and clean geometry in such a satisfying way.
This is why I chose a bezel for my own ring. It highlighted my emerald-cut diamond beautifully. Bezels work especially well for step-cut diamonds like emeralds and Asschers because the setting mirrors their crisp, elongated facets. The result is a design that feels cohesive, clean, and intentionally modern.
From a practical standpoint, bezel settings are also a smart choice for protecting softer or more fragile stones. For example, diamonds are a 10 on the Mohs Hardness Scale which makes them incredibly durable. But popular bridal alternatives like emeralds, which rank around 7.5 to 8, can be more vulnerable to chips and fractures, especially at the edges. A bezel setting wraps the stone in a rim of metal, helping to shield those high-risk areas while still letting the beauty of the stone shine through.

Design Possibilities with Bezel Rings
One of the things I love most about bezels is how much room there is for creativity. My ring is a simple bezel solitaire, but this setting can be adapted in so many ways.
Some ideas include:
- Half bezels
- Two-tone metal bezels
- Milgrain detailing
- Shared bezels for multi-stone rings
Each of these options can add personality without sacrificing the strength and structure that make bezels so appealing.

Is a Bezel Ring Right for You?
If you are active, work with your hands, or just want a ring that is easy to wear and low maintenance, a bezel is a great option. I often recommend it to people in medical or creative fields who wear gloves, work with tools, or simply want the peace of mind that comes with extra security.
Here's who often benefits from the practical elegance of a bezel:
- Hairdressers and barbers – Prongs can easily snag on hair or styling tools, but bezels lie smooth and flat.
- Healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors, physical therapists) – Gloves and gowns flow smoothly over bezels without tearing or tugging.
- Chefs, bakers, baristas – From gloves to equipment, bezels won't catch or loosen.
- Mechanics, engineers, tradespeople – A bezel stays secure even when handling tools, machinery, or small parts.
- Fitness instructors, yoga teachers, athletes – Low-profile bezels won't snag during movement and won't risk stone loss from prong damage.
- Parents and caretakers – When you're lifting children or running around, bezels give you one less thing to worry about.
- Frequent travelers – Safe, secure, and resistant to the bumps of transit and adventure.
And if you love a clean, minimalist look but still want your ring to feel unique, a bezel offers the perfect combination.
