The timeline mistake that derails summer proposals

Every year, without fail, couples come to us in late May or early June with a Fourth of July proposal in mind and the assumption that a ring can be ready in two weeks.

It can't. Not one worth giving.

A fully custom engagement ring — designed with intention, handmade in our Georgetown studio, set and finished to the standard we've held since 1906 — takes six to eight weeks from the moment your design is finalized and production begins. Add in the consultation visits that happen before that point, and the real lead time from first conversation to ring in hand is closer to ten to twelve weeks.

That means if you're proposing in July, your first visit should happen in April. For an August proposal, May is your window. For Labor Day weekend, you want to be sitting down with our team no later than mid-June.

If any of those dates have already passed, come in anyway. We'll tell you honestly what's possible and find the best path forward. But if your proposal is still ahead of you, the time to start is right now.

Your week-by-week summer timeline

◥ Weeks 1-2: The first conversation

Your first visit to our Georgetown showroom is an exploration, not a commitment. There's no pressure and no expectation that you'll arrive with a fully formed vision. What we're doing is getting to know you and the person you're buying for.

What does their jewelry look like now? Do they gravitate toward bold statements or quiet elegance? Are they drawn to vintage forms or clean modern lines? Do they wear warm metals or cool ones?

Bring anything that helps — a saved photo, a description, even just a strong instinct about what feels right. Our designers have worked from far less and produced something extraordinary.

We'll also talk honestly about the budget in this first visit. Because we manufacture everything in-house in the United States, we keep tight control over our costs — and that means we can build something genuinely beautiful across a wider range of budgets than most couples expect.

◥ Weeks 2-3: Choosing the stone

With a design direction established, we move to the center stone — the heart of everything.

We carry conflict-free mined diamonds sourced from Africa, Brazil, and Canada, alongside lab-grown diamonds and precious gemstones in every color and character. Our GIA-trained gemologists will walk you through your options, explain the grading criteria, and place stones in your hand so you can see the differences firsthand.

No certificate tells you what a stone looks like in summer light on a rooftop, or catching the glow of a candlelit dinner. That's something you have to see. We'll make sure you do.

◥ Weeks 3-4: Refining the design

Once the stone is selected, the design work deepens. Working one-on-one with our designers, you'll finalize every detail of the setting — the metal, the profile, the way the stone sits, any engraving or additional stones you want to include.

We sketch and render until the design is exactly right. Nothing enters production until you've approved every element. This is your ring. It should look like it.

◥ Weeks 5-10: Production

When the ring is ready, you'll come in for a final look before it's yours.

We'll go through every detail together — the setting, the finish, the way the stone moves in the light. Any last adjustments happen here. When you walk out, the ring is exactly what you envisioned, ready for the moment you've been planning all along.

DC's best summer proposal spots

Washington in summer has a scale and an energy that few American cities can match. Here are some of the backdrops that make it exceptional for a proposal.

The Lincoln Memorial at sunrise. Most visitors see it under midday sun, surrounded by tour groups. At 6am on a summer morning, it's nearly empty, the light is extraordinary, and the reflection pool is perfectly still. It's a different place entirely — and one of the most memorable proposal settings in the city.

The Kennedy Center Terrace. The outdoor terrace overlooking the Potomac on a summer evening is quietly spectacular. Dinner at one of the restaurants, then a moment outside as the sun sets over the river — it's elegant without being staged.

Georgetown Waterfront Park. Steps from our showroom, the waterfront in summer is alive in all the right ways. A weekday evening, when the crowds thin, offers something genuinely beautiful — the Key Bridge, the water, the last of the daylight.

The US Botanic Garden. Less visited than it deserves to be, and stunning in summer. The outdoor gardens, particularly in the early evening, offer a lush, private-feeling backdrop that photographs beautifully.

A rooftop in the city. Washington has some of the best rooftop settings on the East Coast, with views across monuments and the skyline. A reservation at the right table, at the right moment in the evening, doesn't need any other backdrop.

Hains Point at dusk. The southern tip of East Potomac Park, where two rivers meet. At dusk in summer, it's one of the quietest and most beautiful spots in the city — almost entirely unknown to visitors, completely beloved by locals.

A note on summer and the ring it calls for

Summer proposals have their own aesthetic logic. The light is bright and direct. Rings are seen on bare hands, in sunshine, near water. Stones that perform brilliantly in high light — and settings that are comfortable against an active, warm-weather life — matter more than they might in other seasons.
