Fall in Washington, DC has a way of making everything feel more significant.

It's no coincidence that more proposals happen in the final quarter of the year than any other — Thanksgiving, the holidays, New Year's Eve, and the weeks surrounding them account for a remarkable share of engagements nationwide.
If you're planning to propose this fall, this guide is for you. Specifically, it's about the part that trips up even the most organized planners: the ring timeline.
The number most people get wrong
When couples come to us having left things late, the conversation almost always starts the same way: "I thought it would take two weeks."
It won't.
A fully custom engagement ring — designed, cast, set, and finished to the standard we hold ourselves to — takes six to eight weeks from the point your design is finalized. That's not six to eight weeks from your first visit. That's six to eight weeks from the moment you've chosen your stone, confirmed your design, and given us the go-ahead to build.
Factor in one or two consultation visits before that point, and the real lead time from first conversation to ring in hand is closer to ten to twelve weeks for most custom pieces.
Work backward from your proposal date. If you're planning something for Thanksgiving weekend, you should be walking into our Georgetown showroom by early September at the latest. For a Christmas or New Year's proposal, late September to early October is the window.

Your week-by-week timeline
Here's how a typical custom ring journey looks from first visit to finished piece.
◥ Weeks 1-2: The first conversation
Your initial consultation is exploratory. There's no commitment, no pressure, and no expectation that you'll arrive knowing exactly what you want. What we're doing in this visit is understanding your partner — their aesthetic, their lifestyle, the way they carry themselves — and beginning to sketch a direction.
Bring inspiration if you have it. A saved Instagram post, a screenshot, a description of something they've admired. Even "I have no idea but they hate yellow gold" is a useful starting point.
We'll also have an honest conversation about budget in this visit. Because we manufacture everything in our studio here in the United States, we control our costs directly — and that means we can build something genuinely extraordinary at a wider range of price points than most couples expect.
◥ Weeks 2-3: Choosing the stone
Once we have a design direction, we move to the stone — the heart of everything.
We carry conflict-free mined diamonds sourced from Africa, Brazil, and Canada, as well as lab-grown diamonds and precious gemstones in every color and character. Our GIA-trained gemologists will walk you through your options, explain the grading criteria, and place stones in your hand so you can see the differences firsthand.
No certificate tells you what a stone looks like in the warm light of a fall evening or a candlelit November dinner. That's something you have to see. We'll make sure you do.
◥ Weeks 3–4: Design refinement
With a stone selected, the design work begins in earnest. You'll work one-on-one with our designers to develop the setting — the metal, the profile, the prong configuration, any engraving or side-stone details you want to incorporate.
We sketch and render until the design is exactly right. You're involved at every stage. Nothing enters production until you've approved every element. This is your ring. It should look like it.

When the ring is ready, you'll come in for a final look before it's yours.
We'll go through every detail together — the setting, the finish, the way the stone moves in the light. Any last adjustments happen here. When you walk out, the ring is exactly what you envisioned, ready for the moment you've been planning all along.
A note on fall and the ring it calls for
Fall proposals have their own aesthetic logic, and it's worth thinking about before you finalize a design.
The light in autumn is warm, directional, and golden — particularly in the late afternoon, when it hits a stone at low angles and draws out its depth and warmth. Stones that perform beautifully in this kind of light, and settings that feel right against coats, scarves, and the textures of the season, are worth considering.
Fall is also the beginning of a long stretch of indoor evenings — candlelit dinners, holiday gatherings, firelit rooms. A ring that transitions gracefully from an October evening on the waterfront to a Christmas dinner table is a different design consideration than one built purely for summer sun.

DC's best proposal spots — a few ideas
You've got the ring. Now you need the moment. Washington offers some of the most beautiful proposal backdrops in the country, and fall makes all of them better.
The Georgetown Waterfront. A short walk from our showroom, the Potomac at dusk in October is quietly stunning. The Key Bridge in the background, the water catching the last of the light — it's a classic for a reason.
Dumbarton Oaks Gardens . One of DC's most beautiful and undervisited spaces. The formal gardens in fall, with leaves turning across the terraces, feel almost cinematic. The peak foliage window is brief — worth planning around it.
The Lincoln Memorial at night. There's a reason this is one of the most proposed-at spots in the city. The scale of it, the quiet at night, the reflection pool — it earns its reputation. A clear November evening, with the temperature dropping and the city thinning out, is the version to aim for.
Meridian Hill Park. Less crowded than the Mall, genuinely beautiful in autumn, and the cascading fountain makes for a memorable backdrop. A local's choice, and it feels like one.
The National Arboretum. Largely unknown to visitors and breathtaking in fall. The Capitol Columns — Roman columns relocated from the original Capitol building, standing in an open meadow — are one of the strangest and most beautiful spots in DC. Entirely private, entirely memorable.
A private dinner. Sometimes the right answer is a restaurant that means something to both of you, a table in the corner, and a moment that doesn't need a landmark. We've had couples tell us those proposals were their favorites — and the ring still caught the candlelight perfectly.
